NOMINATE A CAMERA LOCATION

You may request here that consideration be given to possible installation of speed control safety cameras on a local road length.

Your request will be forwarded to the relevant local authority, which will conduct an initial review of the road length to see:

  • What is the history of crashes and casualties at the site… and what were they caused by?
  • Does it appear to meet the criteria for installation of cameras? (see below)
  • Would other, alternative, safety improvement works be more effective or appropriate?
  • Have other improvements been carried out or are planned?

If the road length meets all the conditions for installation of cameras, the local authority will make formal application to West Yorkshire Casualty Reduction Partnership for the location to be nominated for a future installation programme.

Further examination of the site and analysis of traffic conditions will then be carried out to ensure the site meets all necessary conditions.

The site will also be reviewed within the context of the overall strategy of West Yorkshire Casualty Reduction Partnership to tackle casualty "blackspots" in order of priority.

Before you submit, please check if a request has already been made for your length of road.

TO REQUEST that consideration be given to possible installation of speed control safety cameras on a local road length, please ensure that your road meets all the necessary criteria, as shown in the following questions:

There are clear Government requirements covering where and how safety cameras can be located, and the measures that must be taken to ensure drivers are aware of them:

Q What is the approx length of the suggested camera location?
Fixed cameras may be installed on a site length between 0.4 and 1.5 km

km
Q How many crashes causing death or serious injury have there been on this road length in the past 3 years?
There needs to have been at least 3 collisions causing death or serious injury per km in the previous 3 years.

Q Approx how many injury-causing crashes have there been at this road length in the past 3 years?
In addition, there must have been a high number of other injury-causing collisions.
At least 20% of drivers must be exceeding the speed limit at the location.

Q Have any highways improvement and/or road safety measures been carried out at this road length in the pastfew years?
Cameras may only be used on a road length where it can be proved that other highways improvement and road safety measures have been tried but have failed significantly to reduce the numbers of crashes and casualties.

If the length of road you wish to suggest for cameras meets these conditions as a minimum, please submit your request on the form provided.

PLEASE NOTE: In West Yorkshire, mobile cameras are currently deployed at sites that meet the same criteria.

In West Yorkshire, ALL camera-ed locations meet or exceed these criteria.

Cameras CANNOT be installed for the purpose of catching speeding motorists; they are installed to encourage motorists to slow down in proven fatal crash zones, thereby reducing the chance of further deaths and injuries.

Location details of fixed and mobile cameras in West Yorkshire are available to the public and media within this website.
