MOBILE PATROL CAMERAS - HOW THEY WORK
Safety cameras are calibrated so that vehicles traveling within the speed limit are "invisible". Only vehicles traveling above the legal speed limit are detected and photographed by the camera.

When the video footage is examined and the offences checked, the precise time, date and speed is displayed on the video tape... as is the registration number of the vehicle, a site identification code and the film number.

Mobile 'speed' cameras employ sophisticated and intensely accurate laser technology. When the camera trigger is squeezed, it emits an incredibly rapid stream of tiny and completely harmless laser beams that bounce off passing vehicles and record their speed in 2/5 of a second-less than the blink of an eye. The camera has a range of up to 2,000 ft.

The equipment can precisely target an oncoming vehicle and can take an accurate reading from just the registration plate of a moving vehicle, This ensures that innocent motorists need not fear being caught in the beam, but it also means that speeding drivers are unable to claim that the beam was affected by another vehicle just in front, behind or at the side of them.

Accuracy and range checks are carried out before and after every time the equipment used. Further checks are made at the beginning and end of each tour of duty.
